Review – HomePod mini

I had no intentions of reviewing or even getting a HomePod mini but things changed when I won one in a giveaway from YouTuber Drew Lipps. I have followed Drew for some time on YouTube and twitter so it was awesome to win this HomePod. Thanks Drew!

Up until receiving the HomePod, most of my listening was done on Amazon Echo speakers or my AirPods. And so far, that hasn’t changed. I blame Siri.

Look, you can go read all of the other reviews of how good the sound is on this device, and it really is. But it is just not convenient enough to replace my Amazon Echos. I just know that Alexa will perform as I intend it to, most times. Siri still isn’t reliable enough for me to go all in on it as a digital assistant.

I recently hooked up my HomePod mini as an additional speaker for my bedroom Apple TV. I absolutely love it. This is where the HomePod finally makes sense to me. I like it so much that I would spend the money and get another one for a complete surround sound experience. I would also consider buying two more for my living room Apple TV if I had a place to put them that my toddler wouldn’t tear down. They sound that great.

The bottom line with the HomePod mini is that they are great quality speakers that you would expect from Apple. On the flip side of that, you are getting the worst assistant when it comes to Siri. If Siri was as good as Alexa at providing information, I would ditch my Echos and go all in with Apple’s HomePods. But, that just isn’t the case. Granted, this is in part because of Apple’s strict privacy and data collection policies, which I cant be too mad about. I just wish there was a better solution.

If you are looking for a good sounding speaker and something you could hook up to your Apple TV for a better sounding experience, seriously, pick one or two of these up. If you are looking for something to replace your smart assistant at home, I can’t quite justify it on that end.

Buy the Apple HomePod mini for $99 from Apple.
