iPhone 12 Event

Here we are again. A second Apple announcement in just as many months. Today we got four new iPhones that make up the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro lines.

iPhone 12

Apple announced the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12. The iPhone 12 mini is as it sounds, small. At 5.4-inches, this is the smallest home-button-less iPhone since the iPhone X was introduced at 5.8-inches. The regular iPhone 12 is the same 6.1-inch screen that the iPhone XR and 11 had before it. One neat thing that we will have to see how durable it really is Apple’s introduction of a “Ceramic Shield” screen on all iPhone 12 and 12 Pro models. Apparently this is 4x likely to not break compared to current smartphone glass. I am curious how this do in the durability tests people perform.

Both phones now have the squared off design similar to that of the iPhone 4 and 5. All of the iPhone 12 models have Apple’s latest A14 Bionic chip. The new iPhone 12 and 12 mini have two cameras which is the wide and ultra-wide lens similar to that of the iPhone 11.

All of the new iPhones support 5G technology. So once 5G is rolled out to the masses, these phones will be able to take advantage of the faster speeds. Until then, Apple included a feature called Smart Data Mode where it will drop back down to 4G speeds when 5G is not available or not needed.

Apple also launched new accessories for all of the new phones announced today. Apple brought back the MagSafe brand and made magnetic cases that work with a new magnetic charger. The cases will come in silicone, leather, and clear. The charger seems to be able to work without these cases and will be able to wirelessly charge your device 2x as fast as current QI wireless charging allows.

There are brand new colors for the iPhone 12 lineup. They come in white, black, blue, green, and red.

The 12 mini will start at $699 for Verizon and AT&T customers and $729 for T-Mobile customers for 64GB of storage and go all the way up to 256GB.

The larger iPhone 12 will also start at 64GB of storage at $799 for Verizon and AT&T and $829 for T-Mobile customers.

The iPhone 12 mini will be available to order on November 6th and will be on shelves November 13th.

The iPhone 12 will be available to order on October 16th and will be on shelves October 23rd.

iPhone 12 Pro

The iPhone 12 Pro continues in two sizes. The smaller regular 12 Pro got a size increase from 5.8-inches to 6.1-inches. The iPhone 12 Max also got a size increase from 6.5-inches to 6.7-inches. So now, not only do we have the smallest modern design iPhone but also the largest. Like the regular iPhone 12, the Pro’s get the A14 Bionic chip. The Pro versions, like last year’s 11 Pro, get the three cameras: wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto lens.  The 12 Pro’s also get a Lidar sensor on the rear cameras which will help with Augmented Reality (AR) applications.

The larger Pro Max gets some distinguishing upgrades from the regular 12 Pro when it comes to the camera. You will have a 5X optical zoom and 12X digital zoom range on the camera compared to the 12 Pro’s 4X optical zoom and 10X digital zoom.

The 12 Pro and Pro Max come in four colors – Graphite, Silver, Gold, and a new Pacific Blue.

The 12 Pro starts at $999 for 128GB and the 12 Pro Max starts at $1099.

The iPhone 12 Pro will be available to order on October 16th and will be on shelves October 23rd.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max will be available to order on November 6th and will be on shelves November 13th.

The Rest

Apple also announced a new speaker called the HomePod Mini. This new speaker has a brand new look and is significantly less expensive than Apple’s current speaker.

The new HomePod Mini comes in black and white and will be available to order on November 6th and in stores November 16th for $100.

I will be following this post up with my personal thoughts on the event later on. Let me know if you have any questions on any of the devices. My quick take, very small upgrades and no huge reasons to upgrade unless you are in need of a new phone.
